Hey everyone, I'm Alex, thanks for clicking and welcome to this lesson on twenty ways
So, "cool" is a word that has changed, you know, meanings over the decades.
What is cool in one decade is maybe not cool in another decade.
Cool typically means something that is excellent or very good or some - it has a positive feeling.
So, when you have - you know a dictionary definition of cool, it's really hard to just
put it to just one thing, because it's different things to different people.
What's cool to me might not be cool to you.
So, it really depends on, you know, your age and what you like and what you feel is excellent
or really tough and neat and cool.
So, in this lesson, I'm going to try to explain as well as I can, the different ways you can
So, let's go with the first one, and the first category.
This is when you want to say that something is really "Wow", amazing.
So, you can say, "That's awesome".
You're supposed to repeat, so let's repeat after me: That's awesome.
Alright, so in these words, "awesome", think of like, your eyes are open, your mouth is
So, if something is awesome, it just - you don't know how to react to it.
You are in the presence of something truly amazing and great.
Wicked has like, a bit of a tougher meaning.
It's a bit more evil, in a way.
Oh, that is wicked, ugh, it just makes me feel like, amazing, okay?
You see the word "kill", like it's so awesome that I want to die.
Like, that's not even from this world, and you'll see, "That's out of this world" later.
That's - I can't believe my eyes, okay?
So, if you see something really amazing, cool, you can say, "That's unreal".
You can, again, so what do we say that's cool, right?
You can talk about movies that you think are cool, or video games, or books, so it can
be the media, the entertainment we consume.
You can also talk about people and sports and other things being cool.
A person can have a cool fashion sense, right?
So, if something is unreal, if you watch like, a video game trailer and maybe the graphics
look too good to be true, like they look life-like.
You can say, "Woah, that's unreal".
Not Unreal the video game, which is also the name of a game, but just in general, like
woah, those graphics are unreal.
Like, they are not from this world, right?
So, this one is more used in the UK, in England.
And if you watch Harry Potter, those movies, you know, Harry and the gang, they say, "Brilliant"
Like woah, cool, like amazing, okay?
Next, so repeat after me, we'll go through this line here: That's sweet.
Okay.
If something is sweet, it's like sugar, it's like candy, right?
So, think of, I don't know, again, you're watching a movie trailer and you see something
that you weren't expecting to see like "Woah, that is sweet."
If you extend it, it sounds even better.
Something that just tastes like candy, tastes like sugar, it's so sweet, it's so nice.
So, when you think of rad and groovy, groovy in particular, this is something that is enjoyable
So, if you're at a concert, you think of music as like, having a feel, a flow.
So, you're like, "Yeah, that's a groovy concert, man.
Yeah, it's a groovy flow", okay?
So, something is groovy, it's rad or radical.
"Groovy" is more from, like, the 70s, a little bit from the 80s, 1980s.
"Rad" definitely more from the 1980s.
It was definitely made popular, a lot more popular, by the Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles
It's the short form for "radical", or if you're seen the original Ninja Turtles movie, where
they're going, "Radical, radical, radical, radical" when they're little turtles.
So, "rad", the original Ninja Turtles movie, not the Michael Bay abominations.
So, "rad" is just the short form of "radical" and it's just like something that's enjoyable
You would think that "sick", because [cough] is bad thing, and "ill" which is, again, is
another way to say, "I'm sick, I am ill".
I don't know why people inverted this, but somehow, the word "sick", the word "ill" has
a positive meaning, depending on the context that you're using it.
So, you can say, "Ah man, that movie was sick."
People read and use the word "sick" to describe books, I guess that's possible, but just - it
So, when you think of something as being badass, it's cool because it's tough, it's hard.
When you think of an action movie and you have a very tough, strong hero and that hero,
you know, does stuff that is very, well, badass, right?
Maybe they don't show as much emotion.
They are totally badass, tough, hard, rough.
A game, like God of War, a lot of people would say, the God of War series is badass video
game series, usually you're doing like, macho stuff in it.
But, badass isn't only about being macho.
It specifically means like, tough.
So, someone can have a badass fashion sense, if they dress in leather, maybe, I don't know.
Next, "bitchin'", so it's kind of 1980s, '90s, and brought back with the Stranger Things
on Netflix, this word is back a little bit more.
"Bitchin'" is just another way of saying excellent.
Like, "That was a bitchin' album" if you are talking about music and a particular album.
I don't use bitchin' that often.
I typically use "That's badass".
I use "sweet" a lot, I think, with my friends.
And did I tell you that there's some explicit language in this video?
There's some explicit language in this video.
Next: That is the sh*t, or that is the good stuff.
Like, that is the stuff, the thing that I want, that I need in my life.
That is the top example of whatever I'm looking at, okay?
So, if I am talking, again, about, so I've talked about video games, I've talked about
So, if I - yeah, let's talk about Stranger Things.
Season One of Stranger Things, that is the sh*t, that is the good stuff, that is what
That is what I need in my life, okay?
So, if you - you can talk about, if you go to a restaurant, even.
If you say, "That's sh*t", that's terrible, okay?
But if you say, "That is the sh*t", that is great, that excellent.
So, you can say, "Oh man, this pasta is the sh*t", okay, or "This food is the sh*t".
If you say "It's sh*t", that's terrible.
But add "the", "the sh*t", that is the good stuff.
That is out of this world, okay?
That is so amazing, so cool, so good, it's not even from Earth, okay?
It is, like, extraterrestrial.
It is interplanetary, it is from space, okay?
So, a lot of Science Fiction movies, literally, are out of this world.
But, if something makes you feel like, this isn't from Earth, this not even from our planet,
this is so amazing, it's so cool, you can say, "It's out of this world", okay?
So, "legit" is the short form for legitimate.
So, this is real stuff, the real thing, okay?
So, if you say someone is legit, right, they have no pretense in their identity.
They're not trying to be a certain way.
They just are a certain way, okay?
So, you know, they say that you don't try to be cool.
You just are cool when you really know who you are, you're just - you're cool.
So, if something is legit, it is the real thing.
So, if I say, you know, "The first Matrix movie is legit", like, that is an awesome,
really cool Science Fiction movie.
But, the first Matrix movie is legit.
You should watch it after this video.
Dope, same thing, like, real good.
So, "dope", you can talk about anything.
Again, like, "That book was dope", or "This furniture is dope", I'm just looking at a
Sorry guys, I couldn't think of an example.
It's not the best example, but I guess furniture can be dope, alright?
I've got a chair here, it's pretty dope.
Looks pretty comfortable, right?
So, that's a dope chair right there.
And finally, the final three, I'll give you some oldies, okay?
If you want to sound like you're from the 1960s or maybe the 1920s, I've got some here:
Think of people on drugs, basically.
If something is far out, it's kind of like saying "Out of this world".
It's not here, it's woah, it's far out, okay?
So again, you can think of movies, you can think of - if you see a presentation or an
idea that really is cool to you like, "Oh, I didn't think of that before, far out, man!"
We still use this in the 2000s, so you can use that, that's okay.
And then finally, you probably won't use these.
If you do, maybe use it with like, grandparents who are from the 1920s, if you know, if they're
And I guess that's cool, okay?
I guess that's kind of cool, because cats are really lazy and sleepy.
And if they have pyjamas, that makes them even more cool.
Because cats just don't care, okay?
So, man, that is the cat's pyjamas.
Mom, this soup is the cat's pyjamas.
Oh grandma, this pizza that you made?
I would use pizza as my food example, because I think most people can relate with pizza.
This pizza is the bee's knees, grandma, it really is.
Okay, so, let's repeat all of these one more time to make sure that you've got it all.
So, twenty ways to say "That's cool": That's awesome.
Cool people do this in the 1920s, you didn't know?
