In this video, I will introduce the past simple English tense.
This grammar tense can help you explain a past general state, action, or habit.
There's a lot to learn and it's a very important tense, so keep watching.
In this video, I will talk about the 'be' verb in the past simple tense.
The 'be' verb in the past simple tense can be used to describe a past general state.
We use the 'be' verbs, βwasβ and βwereβ in this tense.
βJames', or he 'was a teacher.β
So for βIβ, βheβ, βsheβ, βitβ, we use the past tense 'be' verb, βwasβ.
However, for βyouβ, βweβ and βtheyβ, we use βwereβ.
βYou were a good student.β
βYour parents, or they were at the park.β and βWe were at home for two hours.β
In this last sentence, you see that the duration is emphasized.
Now I will talk about regular verbs in the past simple tense.
Take a look at these examples.
but really it doesn't matter for regular verbs in the past simple tense.
Because no matter what the subject is, all we have to do is add βdβ or βedβ
Here the verb is βplayβ, so I added β-edβ.
βThe car, or it needed gas.β
For the past simple tense, I added β-edβ.
Again, an βedβ at the of βwatchβ.
βYou exercised for an hour.β
In this case, the verb is βexerciseβ.
I only need to add a βdβ to make it the past tense.
And finally, βThey usually worked after school.β
And I added an βedβ to make it in the past tense.
The word βusuallyβ shows that this was a habit.
Remember, the past simple tense can be used to show past habits.
Now, I'll talk about irregular verbs in the past simple tense.
Remember, for regular verbs, we only add βdβ or βedβ to make a verb into the past tense.
However, for irregular verbs, we have to change the verb in a different way.
Let's take a look at some examples.
βateβ is the past simple tense of βeatβ.
The next example says, βNara wrote a story.β
And because it's irregular to change it into the past tense, we change the verb to βwroteβ.
βYou often came home late.β
The verb here is βcomeβ and it's been changed to βcameβ.
You'll notice that we had the word βoftenβ to show a habit.
The verb here is βbuyβ and it's been changed to βboughtβ to show the past simple tense.
And finally, βMy parents sent me money for a year.β
Here the verb βsentβ is the past tense of βsendβ.
Here we also see βfor a yearβ, this shows duration.
Now I will talk about the negative form for the 'be' verb in the past simple tense.
The first one says, βI was not hungry.β
For the past simple tense, the negative 'be' verb
I f the subject is βIβ, βheβ, βsheβ or βitβ, we say βwas notβ.
For example, βI was notβ or βshe was notβ or the contraction βwasn'tβ.
βI wasn'tβ.
So let's look again, βI was not hungry.β
Now, if the subject is βyouβ, βweβ or βtheyβ,
We say βwere notβ or the contraction βweren'tβ.
βThe children, or they were not quiet.β
βThe children were not quiet.β
And then, βThe dog', or it was not, or 'wasn't playful.β
Now, let's talk about how to form the negative in the past simple tense for non-'be' verbs,
What we do for non-'be' verbs is simply put βdid notβ after the subject.
And you'll notice that for the verb, we don't make any changes.
βHe didn't catch the ball.β
Again, it's βhe did notβ, but here we used a contraction,
βHe didn't catch the ball.β
Again, here's the contraction for βdid notβ.
And you'll notice that for the verb, we didn't change it at all.
Here's an irregular verb, and here's a regular verb, we keep them in the base form.
And finally, βWe didn't think about that.β
Again, we simply say βdid notβ or βdidn'tβ.
Now I will introduce two ways to form questions for the past simple tense.
Take a look at the first example.
In this first sentence, we see the 'be' verb βwasβ.
All you have to do to turn this into a question is switch the order the first two words.
You can answer by saying βYes, he was.β or βNo, he wasn't.β
The next sentence also has a 'be' verb.
βThey were comfortable.β
So again, switch the first two words.
βWere they comfortable?β
The answers can be, βYes, they were.β
However, look at the third sentence.
There is no 'be' verb in this sentence.
Instead, we see the action verb βlivedβ.
So what we do is no matter what the subject,
we start the question with βdidβ.
You'll notice that the verb no longer is in the past tense.
We use the base form of the verb.
You can say βYes, he did.β
βThey won the contest last year.β
The verb here is βwonβ, that's not a 'be' verb.
So again, we start the question with βdidβ .
And then the subject βtheyβ, we use the base form of the verb and that's βwinβ.
βDid they win the contest last year?β
You can say, βYes, they did.β
Now I'll introduce how to create an answer WH questions in the past simple tense.
You'll notice that after each WH word comes the word βdidβ.
βWhere didβ and βWhy didβ.
What comes after that the subject and then the base form of the verb.
βWhat did you do last night?β
βWhat did you do last night?β
I can answer by saying something like, βI watched a movie.β
You'll notice that the answer is in the past simple tense.
βWhen did you get home last night?β
βWhere did they eat lunch?β
Again, βateβ is the past tense of βeatβ.
Answer in the past simple tense.
And finally, βWhy did the company hire him?β
βThe company hired him because he's a hard worker.β
Wow, we learned a lot in this video.
