Let's do a checkup of the present simple tense.
We'll take a look at the affirmative, negative, and question forms.
Let's start with the first checkup.
In this checkup, I want you to focus on the βbeβ verbs.
Remember βbeβ verbs, in the present simple tense, can be βisβ, βamβ, or βareβ.
Take a look at the first sentence.
It says, βShe _ blank _ at school.β
The subject of this sentence is βsheβ.
What βbeβ verb do we use for βsheβ?
The correct answer is βisβ.
Now if you were thinking of the negative, the correct answer would be βshe isn'tβ
And if we want to use a contraction for βshe isβ, we can say βshe's at schoolβ
For the next one, it says, βThey _ blank _ twenty years old.β
The subject of this sentence is βtheyβ.
What βbeβ verb do we use for βtheyβ?
The correct answer is βareβ.
For the negative, you can also use βaren'tβ or βare notβ.
Also if you want to use the contraction for βthey areβ, you can say,
The next sentence says, βHis father _ blank_ busy.β
The subject of this sentence is βhis fatherβ.
What subject pronoun do we use for βhis fatherβ?
The correct answer is βheβ.
Remember for βheβ, βsheβ, βitβ, the βbeβ verb is βisβ.
For the negative, we can say βisn'tβ or βis notβ.
And for a contraction, for βfatherβ and βisβ, we can say, βHis father's busy.β
Now I want you to try to find the mistakes in this sentence.
The subject is βweβ and the βbeβ verb is βareβ.
Therefore, the correct answer is βwe are notβ,
or the contraction, βwe aren't good friends.β
Think about the subject of this sentence.
And βJohnβ, the subject pronoun is βheβ.
Therefore, we don't use βareβ, we use βisβ.
And finally, βIt am a puppy.β
hmm This one is a big mistake.
What βbeβ verb do we use for βitβ?
The correct answer is βisβ.
So we don't say, βIt am a puppy,β we say, βIt is a puppy.β
Let's move on to the next checkup.
For the next checkup, I want you to think of some other verbs in the present simple tense.
Take a look at the first sentence.
βHe __ blank __ β¦β, I want you to think of the verb, βlike his dinnerβ.
What do we do to the verb when the subject is βheβ, βsheβ, or βitβ?
For the negative, you can also say, βHe doesn't like his dinner.β
The next sentence says, βMy students __ blank __β¦β, I want you to think of βneedβ,
ββ¦booksβ.
What is the subject pronoun for βmy studentsβ?
The correct answer is βtheyβ.
If the subject is βIβ, βyouβ, βweβ, or βtheyβ, in the present simple tense,
we don't change the verb, we keep it as is.
So the correct answer is, βMy students need books.β
Now for the negative, you can say, βMy students don't need books.β
The next sentence says, βI __ blank __β¦β, think of the verb,
Again the subject is βIβ, therefore we don't change the verb.
The correct answer is, βI live in London.β
For the next part, I would like for you to try to find the mistake in the sentence.
βHe doesn'tβ¦β, that's correct.
However, we do not add an βsβ when we have βdoesn'tβ in front of βitβ.
The subject of the sentence is βheβ.
For βheβ, βsheβ, βitβ, when we're making a sentence in the present simple tense,
we use βdoesβ not βdoβ.
So the correct answer is, βDoes he eat candy?β
And finally, βSam is play computer games.β
There are two present simple verbs here and we can't have that,
so the correct way to fix this sentence is to get rid of the βisβ.
So take that out and say, βSam plays computer games.β
Add an βsβ because the subject is βSamβ which is a βheβ.
Let's move on to the next practice.
For this next practice, we're taking a look at routines.
Remember the present simple tense can be used to describe events that happen regularly.
Let's take a look at the first sentence,
βWe _ blank _ the bus every day.β
And I want you to use the verb βtakeβ.
Here we see the clue word βevery dayβ which shows that this is a routine.
The subject of the sentence is βweβ.
remember if the subject is βIβ, βyouβ, βweβ, or βtheyβ,
Therefore the correct answer is, βWe take the bus every day.β
In the second sentence it says, βHe _ blank _ to school every morning.β
What do we do if the subject is βheβ, βsheβ, or βitβ?
We add βsβ or βesβ to the verb.
In this example, the verb is βgoβ, so we have to add βesβ.
βHe goes to school every morning.β
In the next sentence, it says, βLizzy not play (in parenthesis) tennis.β
Here I want you to think about the negative form.
The subject pronoun is βsheβ so what do we do for the negative?
We say βdoes notβ or the contraction βdoesn't play tennisβ.
We do not add an βsβ or βesβ to the end of the verb.
Instead we say βdoesn'tβ or βdoes notβ.
Now I want you to find a mistake in the next sentence.
βThey watches TV at night.β
Can you figure out what's wrong with the sentence?
Therefore, remember, we do not change the verb.
In the next sentence, or question, it says, βDoes he plays soccer every week?β
The subject of the sentence is βheβ.
To make a sentence, putting βdoesβ at the beginning is okay,
However, we don't put an βsβ at the end of βplayβ.
Therefore, the correct answer is to simply say,
βDoes he play soccer every week?β
And finally, βHe always forget his book.β
In this case, the subject is βheβ.
Remember, again, for he/she/it we add 's' or 'es' to the end of the verb.
What's the verb in the sentence?
Therefore we have to say, βHe always forgets his book.β
Let's move on to the next practice.
In this checkup, we'll take a look at how the present simple tense can be used to describe
Take a look at the first sentence.
It says, βThe airplane _ blank _ tonight.β
And we're looking at the verb βleaveβ.
What is the subject of the sentence?
The correct answer is βairplaneβ.
What subject pronoun do we use for βairplaneβ?
Remember in the present simple tense, for βheβ, βsheβ, βitβ, we add an βsβ
The verb here is βleaveβ so we simply add an βsβ.
The correct answer is, βThe airplane leaves tonight.β
In the second sentence, it says, βDoes the movie _blank_ soon?β
And we're using the verb βstartβ.
What is the subject of this sentence?
And what subject pronoun do we use for movie?
So it's like saying, βDoes it _ blank _ soon?β
Well this is a question, so we already have the correct word in the front - βdoesβ.
For he/she/it, when we're asking a question, we use βdoesβ.
Now all we have to do is use the same verb in its base form,
so βDoes the movie start soon?β
We do not add an βsβ or βesβ here.
Finally, it says, βViki _ blank _ tomorrow.β
The subject of the sentence is βVickiβ.
βVickiβ is a girl so the subject pronoun is βsheβ.
You'll remember now that forβ¦ in this case, we put βworksβ.
Now let's find the mistakes in the sentence below.
βHe do leave at 3:30 p.m.β
Actually there's only one mistake.
βHe do leave at 3:30 p.m.β
We do not need the βdoβ here.
We only use βdoβ in a question or in the negative form.
But also the subject is βheβ, so we would use βdoesβ.
Either way we don't need this here.
Well now we have the verb βleaveβ with the subject βheβ.
We simply change this to βleavesβ.
Just like we did in the first sentence.
In the next sentence, βThey don't start school today.β
βThey don'tβ¦β, that's correct.
For subject pronoun βtheyβ.
However, in the negative form, we don't have to change the main verb at all.
Therefore, all we will do is say, βThey don't start school today.β
No βsβ.
Finally, βDoes we eat at noon?β
What is the subject or subject pronoun in the sentence?
The correct answer is βweβ.
Think about the question form.
Do we say βdoβ or βdoesβ in the question form for the subject pronoun βweβ?
The correct answer is βdoβ.
So the correct way to say this sentence or question is,
You're done with the practice.
You put in a lot of practice today.
The present simple tense is not easy, and I'm really happy to see how hard you guys
