In this section, let's do a checkup for the past continuous tense.
Take a look at the first sentence.
βLast night they were blank at school.β
I want you to try to fill in the blank with the negative for the verb βstayβ.
Remember, for the negative of the past continuous,
all you have to do is put βnotβ and then βverb-ingβ after the 'be' verb.
βThey were not staying at school last.β
βLast night, they were not staying at school.β
βTwo days ago you blank soccer.β
Again try the negative for the verb βplayβ.
βTwo days ago blank not play soccer.β
In this case, the first thing that's missing is the βbeβ verb.
If the subject is βyouβ, can you think of which be verb needs to be put in there?
The correct answer is βwereβ.
Remember, βverb-ingβ. So βyou were not playingβ
βtwo days ago, you were not playing soccerβ
You can also use a contraction and say,
βYou weren't playing soccer.β
Now try to find the mistake in the next sentence.
βYesterday, she were reading at home.β
The subject of this sentence is βsheβ so the βbeβ verb to use is not βwereβ.
βYesterday, she was reading at home.β
In the next sentence it says, βTomorrow, they were seeing their friends.β
And we have the βverb-ingβ
Remember the past continuous is for the past.
βTomorrowβ is not the past.
So instead, we need to put a word that shows the past.
For example, I can say, βyesterdayβ.
βYesterday, they were seeing their friends.β
Now, let's start a checkup of the βwhenβ usage of the past continuous tense.
Take a look at the first example.
It says, βAndrea and Johnβ blank when they bank hurt.β
Remember βwhenβ shows an interrupting action.
It needs to be used with the past simple tense.
So let's first look at the second blank.
What's the past tense of the verb βgetβ?
Now let's take a look at the action that was in progress in the past.
βAndrea and Johnβ or βtheyβ
Well what comes after βtheyβ?
βwereβ.
Then remember we need to add -ing to the verb.
βThey were skiingβ or βAndrea and John were skiing when they got hurtβ.
The next example says, βIt blank not raining when the game blankβ.
And I want you to use the verb βstartβ for the second blank.
Take a look βwhen the game blankβ what's the past tense of βstartβ?
βstartedβ
Now let's look at the first part of the sentence.
So what βbeβ verb do we use for 'it'?
βwasβ
βIt was not raining when the game started.β
Now find the mistake in the next sentence.
βI wasn't study at the library yesterdayβ.
The subject here is βIβ and so the βbeβ verb βwasβ is correct.
Here there's a contraction, βI wasn'tβ for βI was notβ.
Now the problem is with the verb.
Remember we need to put ββingβ at the end of the verb.
βI wasn't studying at the library yesterday.β
And finally, βWe did meet our friends last weekend.β
That sounds right, but remember we're doing the past continuous tense.
βwereβ
Remember, we need to add an β-ingβ to the end of the verb,
so we take out βdidβ and say, βWe were meeting our friends last weekend.β
Now, for this checkup, we'll look at the βwhileβ usage of the past continuous tense.
Take a look at the first example.
βWhile I blank someone blank my bike.β
When we use βwhileβ in the past continuous tense,
we're showing that two actions happened at the same time in the past
or they were happening at the same time in the past.
So we need to use the past continuous for both actions.
I want you to use βshopβ in the first blank.
Remember, the subject here is βIβ so I need to use the βbeβ verb βwasβ.
Now βsomeoneβ can be a βheβ or βsheβ.
Therefore, again we need to use βwasβ
and then the βverb-ingβ of βstealβ.
βWhile I was shopping, someone was stealing my bike.β
I want you to use the verb βcookβ.
The subject is βheβ and so I need to use βwas cookingβ.
βWhile he was cooking, his girlfriend was cleaning.β
Try to find the mistake in the next sentence.
βJane was looking for us while we get off the plane.β
The first part of the sentence is correct.
Now the second part of the sentence.
Notice it's not in the past continuous tense.
βWhile we get off the planeβ
So what we need to do is say, βwere gettingβ.
βJane was looking for us while we were getting off the plane.β
The next sentence says, 'I was watching TV while my wife sleepβ
Again this part of the sentence did not use the past continuous tense.
My wife is a βsheβ and so I need to say βwas sleepingβ.
βI was watching TV while my wife was sleeping.β
Great job, everyone. Let's move on.
Good job, everybody in learning the past continuous tense.
This tense can be a little difficult and a little tricky.
Especially when it comes to the βwhenβ and βwhileβ usage.
It'll take some practice to really master it, but I know you can do it.
