Iβm Esther and in this video, weβre going to talk about how to describe the cost or
Now this is important to people like me who like shopping.
Rightβ¦
So, for example, I like shopping, especially for dresses.
So, I might say, the cost of βThis dress is affordable.β
Okβ¦
βThis dress is affordable.β
βAffordableβ means that this dress is not too expensive.
I have enough money and I can pay for this dress.
I have enough money, I βcanβ buy this dress.
So, I would say, βThis dress is affordable.β
I can also say, βThis dress is inexpensive.β
We all know what βexpensiveβ is, but we say βinexpensiveβ, so thatβs the opposite.
βInexpensive.β
βAffordableβ and βinexpensiveβ have very similar meanings.
Again, I have enough money to buy this.
It means itβs not expensive, but itβs a little bit more negative.
If you say that something is βcheapβ, people may think that the quality is not very
good.
Ok, now letβs look at the opposite.
The opposite of these words is βexpensiveβ.
βThis dress is expensive.β
It costs a lot of moneyβ¦too much money.
Maybe I donβt want to buy it.
We can also say, βover-pricedβ.
βThis dress is over-priced.β
That means the price is too high.
So again, I donβt want to buy this dress.
Itβs too expensive and over-priced.
Ok, letβs look at some more examples together.
Letβs look at some examples.
βThe hat was affordable because it was on sale.β
βThe hat was affordable because it was on sale.β
Next.
βI wish this bag was more affordable.β
βI wish this bag was more affordable.β
Next.
βThis computer is surprisingly inexpensive.β
βThis computer is surprisingly inexpensive.β
Next.
βThese shoes look beautiful, but they are too cheap.β
βThese shoes look beautiful, but they are too cheap.β
Next.
βThat jacket is too expensive.β
βThat jacket is too expensive.β
βI cannot buy this over-priced bag.β
βI cannot buy this over-priced bag.β
Ok, so in this video, we learned that when we want to describe the cost of something,
as not too expensive, we say βaffordableβ.
Okβ¦
Something is βaffordableβ if itβs not too expensive.
If I can buy it with the money I have.
On the other hand, if something is not affordable, if the cost is very high, we say βexpensiveβ
or βover-pricedβ.
For me, ahhβ¦I think some brands like H&M and Forever21 are affordable.
Some people donβt think this way.
Some of the items can be cheap.
But for me, I like those brands because they are affordable.
Ahhhβ¦another store that I like, in Koreaβ¦itβs called Zara or μλΌ, in Korea as they say.
Uhmβ¦they have some items that are affordable and some items that are very expensive.
Ok, well thatβs what I wanted to share in this video.
Bye.
Iβm Bill.
In this video, weβre going to talk about something fun that people like to doβ¦and
We like to go on vacationβ¦and we like to tell people about our vacations.
Because, if we can make them jealous, thatβs even better.
Now, thereβs two questions here that weβre going to use to talk about βvacationβ.
One question is βwhere we goβ for vacation.
And the other question is βwhat we doβ when on vacation.
Now, the first question is, βDid you go anywhere for vacation?β
So, vacation time is finished and itβs just time to talk about it.
And thereβs different answers you can give.
Easy is not always good because you want to be interesting when you talk.
So, someone asks you, βDid you go anywhere for vacation?β
Well, start by βwhere did you goβ?
Popular places people love to go to.
Or, you could just say, βI went to the beach.ββ¦cause people like the beach.
Now, βwent toβ is good to say.
You can also go with βvisitedβ.
And again, just βwhat place did you visitβ?
We have, βI visited Halla Mountain.β
Orβ¦
βI visited Haeundai Beach.β
Those are all good places to visit.
But now, sometimes you canβt go on vacation.
Something stops you from going on vacation.
And, if that happens, you can use this phrase.
We have, βNo, I had toβ¦β
And we say, βI had toβ¦β because that means something stopped you.
So now, it could be, βNo, I had to work.β
Ughβ¦
Orβ¦
βNo, I had to save money.β
Because if you need to save money, vacation is not a good idea.
Now, letβs look at some more examples of using these.
βDid you go anywhere on vacation this year?β
Orβ¦
Orβ¦
βI was too busy to go anywhere.β
Ok, now that we talked about βwhere we goβ for vacation, weβre going to talk about
βwhat we doβ when weβre on vacation.
Alrightβ¦
And so, when that happens, we have this question here:
βWhat did you do on vacation?β
Because we go somewhere, but now we have to do something.
Now, the answers are notβ¦like before, with the βI went toβ¦β, βI visitedβ.
Alrightβ¦
You got to think a little more, but itβs still easy.
You start with βIβ, of course.
But now, βdoing somethingβ, you need a verb.
So, you have to use βpast tenseβ verb, because vacation, itβs finished.
So you have to say things like, βI swamβ¦at the beach.β
Somethingβ¦something like, βI hiked on a mountain.β
Alrightβ¦
Just fill in what you were doing.
Okβ¦
Now, some people, when they go on vacation, they donβt like to do many things.
For some, vacation is about being lazy.
So some people may just say, βAhhh, vacation, I just rested.β
Okβ¦
Letβs take a look at some more examples of these.
βWhat did you do during your vacation?β
Orβ¦
βI just relaxed and read a lot.β
Ok, so there you have two good and easy questions about vacations.
You have the βDid you go anywhere for vacation?β, and then the βWhat did you do on vacation?β.
Now, good to ask these questions to people, but itβs better to answer the questions
because that means you had vacation.
So, I hope you can talk about vacations and I hope you get to take many vacations yourself.
Iβm Bill and what I have for you right now are three questions you can ask a foreigner
People like to talk about where theyβre from.
Itβs easy and itβs comfortable for us to do.
Now, the first question we have here is this: βWhat is the food like in your country?β
Now, many Korean peopleβ¦they say, βOur food is spicy.β
But now, some countries, they donβt eat a lot of spicy food.
So, sometimes, they might say, βOur food is sweet.β
Or even, they might answer, how do they make the food.
Something like, βOur food is grilled.β
Now, another thing is about the foodβ¦is they could talk about what food is popular.
Okβ¦
Now, just like this: βWe eat a lot ofβ¦β
Now, I know from living in Korea, in Korea, βWe eat a lot of kimchi.β
But now, other countries maybe, like America, βWe eat a lot of beef.β
Okβ¦
Andβ¦almostβ¦not every day, but almostβ¦it seems like that happens.
Or even, βWe eat a lot of eggs.β
Just βwhat do you eat a lot of?β
Ok, letβs look at next question.
Alright, now here is another question you can ask a foreigner about their country.
βWhat is your country famous for?β
This is just about what is popular in their country.
Okβ¦
So now, Iβm an American, so if someone were to ask me βWhat is America famous for?β
I could just answer like this: βMany people know Hollywood.β
Ya, Hollywood, where America makes the movies.
Okβ¦
You can say, βMany people know Hollywood.β
βItβs famous for Hollywood.β
Okβ¦
Now, by βitβ, I mean βmy countryβ.
So, my country, βitβsβ famous for Hollywood.
βWhat is Canada famous for?β
Well, thatβs easy, we could do, βMany people know maple syrup.β
And also, βitβs famous for maple syrup.β
Okβ¦
So, these are two things that are equal that you can use to answer this question.
Ok, letβs look at the last question, now.
Alright, now, hereβs our last question that will help you get a foreigner to tell you
And, it just goes like this: βWhat is there to see in your country?β
Kind of what is famous, again, but something to see.
Okβ¦
So now, what we have here isβ¦the answer can goβ¦
Now, if the person is form France, the easy answer is:
βPeople come to see Eiffel tower.β
βPeople come to see the Great Wall.β
Or again, maybe a Japanese person is visiting.
They can say, βPeople come to see Mount Fuji.β
Now again, if you travel to another country and someone asks you about Korea, you can
just say, βPeople come to see Seoul.β
Or, βPeople come to see Kyeongbuk Palace.β
Alright, letβs take a look at some examples.
βWhat is the food like in your country?β
βWe eat a lot of vegetables.β
βOur food is mostly fired.β
βWe donβt eat much fruit.β
βWhat is your country famous for?β
βItβs famous for ice hockey.β
βMany people know about our mountains.β
βItβs famous for beautiful beaches.β
βWhat is there to see in your country?β
βPeople come to see our old castles.β
βPeople come to see our historical places.β
βPeople come to see our modern cities.β
Alright, so there you have three questions that you can ask a foreigner about their country.
Itβs a great way to start a conversation.
And itβs also a great way to learn something about another place.
I hope this helps you and I hope you can try it soon. Thank you.
