In this first checkup, we'll take a look at
practice questions using the 'be' verb in the past simple tense.
Remember the 'be' verbs in the past simple tense are βwasβ or βwereβ.
Let's take a look at the first sentence.
The subject here is βweβ. So do we use βwasβ or βwereβ?
The correct answer is βwasβ. βHe was at work earlier.β
βWe _____ very happy yesterday.β
If the subject is βweβ, remember the be verb is βwereβ.
βWe were very happy yesterday.β
Next, βMy parents or they __ worried about me.β
If it's 'they', remember we have to say βwereβ.
βMy parents were worried about me.β
If I want to use the negative, I can also say βMy parents weren't worried about me.β
Now I want you to find the mistake in the next sentence.
βWe wasn't good students.β
Can you figure out what's wrong?
The subject here is βweβ, so we don't say βwas notβ.
We need to say βwere notβ or the contraction βweren'tβ.
βWe weren't good students,β is the correct answer.
The next one says, βWere she a teacher?β
Now, this is a question so the be verb comes at the beginning.
That's correct, but the subject here is βsheβ.
Therefore, we need to start with βwasβ.
The subject is βtheyβ, so the answer is
You can use the contraction βweren'tβ or βwere notβ.
Let's move on to the next checkup.
Now, let's practice regular verbs in the past simple tense.
Take a look at the first sentence.
Remember, when changing a regular verb into
the past tense, we add βdβ or βedβ to the end of the verb.
However, there's a separate rule for words that end in βyβ.
We drop the βyβ and we add βiedβ.
The next sentence says, βWe __ pencils.β
We want to use negative because it says βnot useβ.
Remember for the negative, we always use βdid notβ, no matter what the subject.
You can also use the contraction βdidn'tβ.
Now, what do we do to the verb?
We keep it as βisβ. We do not change it.
βWe didn'tβ or βWe did notβ use pencils.
The next sentence says, βHis friends or they walk to the gym.β
What's the past tense of βwalkβ?
We simply have to add βedβ because it's a regular verb.
βHis friends walked to the gym.β
Now, find a mistake in the next sentence.
However, remember we keep the verb as βisβ in the base form.
So we don't say βlikesβ. We say βlikeβ.
The next sentence says, βDid it rained this morning?β
In a question, it's right to start the sentence with βDidβ.
Remember, we do not use the past tense form in the question.
We use the base form of the verb.
βDid it rain this morning?β
And finally, βThey not play the piano.β
So we need a βdidβ in front of βnotβ.
βThey did not play the piano.β
Let's move on to the next checkup.
Now, I'll talk about irregular verbs in the past simple tense.
Take a look at the first sentence.
βHe __ to school.β And the verb is βrunβ.
βrunβ is an irregular verb, so the past tense form is βranβ.
The next sentence says, βWe __ flowers.β
We want to use the negative because here it says βnot growβ.
Remember, no matter what the subject in the negative form,
Then we keep the verb in its base form.
βWe did not growβ or βWe didn't grow flowers.β
The next sentence says, βWhere __ you teach last year?β
Again, all we need to put is βdidβ.
βWhere did you teach last year?β
It doesn't matter what the subject is.
Next, try to find the mistake in the next sentence.
βHe didn't sold newspapers.β
Remember, in the negative, βdidn'tβ is correct for whatever subject there is.
However, we need to keep the verb in its base form.
So the correct answer is, βHe didn't sell newspapers.β
The next sentence says, βDid she sing a song?β
You'll notice it's a similar problem here.
βsangβ is the irregular past tense form of βsingβ.
But in a question, if it starts with βdidβ,
And finally, βWe taked it home.β
The past tense of βtakeβ is βtookβ.
Wow, we learned a lot in this video.
