Let's start a checkup for the present continuous tense.
There's a lot to learn, so let's get started.
For this checkup of the present continuous tense,
we'll look at how this tense can be used to describe an action that's happening right now.
Let's take a look at the first sentence.
βYou -blank- learning English.β
Remember for this tense, we start with the subject and the βbeβ verb
We already have the verb β-ingβ here, so we need the βbeβ verb.
The subject in the first sentence is βyouβ.
For βyouβ, βweβ, and βtheyβ, we use the βbeβ verb - βareβ,
βYou are learning Englishβ right now.
βShe _blank_ not watching TV.β
This is the negative form of the present continuous tense.
We have the word βnotβ before the verb β-ingβ,
However, we're missing the βbeβ verb again.
What is the be verb to use if the subject is βsheβ?
the correct answer is βisβ.
This one says, βI _blank_ studying now.β
Again think of the βbeβ verb that goes before the subject βIβ.
The βbeβ verb is βamβ.
We can also use a contraction and say, βI'm studying nowβ
If we wanted to turn this into the negative form,
we can also say, βI'm not studying now.β
Now, take a look at the next sentence and find the mistake.
Here we have the subject and the subject pronoun for Layla would be βsheβ.
We have the correct βbeβ verb - βisβ,
However, you'll notice we forgot the β-ingβ at the end of the verb.
We need to say, βwatchingβ.
βLayla is watching a movie.β
βThey playing soccer now.β
If you got it the correct answer is we need the βbeβ verb β βareβ
because the subject is βtheyβ.
βThey are playing soccer now.β
And finally, βWhat do you do?β
If you want to ask somebody what they're doing right now,
you say, 'whatββ¦ and the βbeβ verb β βareβ¦ you.. doing?β
Let's move on to the next practice.
For this checkup we'll talk about the present continuous tense
and how it can be used to describe an action that started in the past and continues today.
Let's take a look at the first sentence.
βHe _blank_ studying economics.β
Remember for this tense, we take the subject, a βbeβ verb, and then verb β-ingβ.
Here we already have the verb β-ingβ, βstudyingβ.
The correct βbeβ verb for the subject βheβ is βisβ.
So, βHe is studying economics.β
The next sentence says, βThey're _blank_ for the fight.β
The verb we want to use is βtrainβ.
Now we already have the 'be' verb here.
It's in the contraction βthereβ because it's βthey areβ.
All we have to do now is add β-ingβ to the verb.
βThey're training for the fight these days.β
And βWe _blank_ teaching at the school.β
Again we're missing the βbeβ verb.
What is the βbeβ verb for βweβ?
The correct answer is βareβ.
βWe are teaching at the school.β
Now let's look for the mistakes in the next sentence.
βBen is study to become a doctor.β
Well we have the subject and we have the proper βbe verbβ.
What we're missing is the β-ingβ at the end of βstudyβ.
The correct answer is, βBen is studying to become a doctorβ.
Let's look at the next sentence.
βI don't reading that book.β
βI don't reading that book.β
To form the negative in the present continuous, we don't use βdoβ or βdoesβ
We use the βbeβ verb. What is the be verb for βIβ?
The correct answer is βamβ.
βI am not reading that book.β
There is no contraction for βam notβ.
Finally, βThey are to learn English.β
We have the subject and we have the correct βbeβ verb,
but remember we need verb β-ingβ.
Therefore, the correct answer is,
βThey are learning English.β
Let's move on to the next checkup.
For this checkup we'll take a look at how the present continuous tense
can be used to talk about future plans.
The first sentence says, βThey're play a game tonight.β
The verb we want to use is βplayβ.
Remember we start with the subject and here we have it, βtheyβ.
Then we have the βbeβ verb.
In this case we used a contraction for βthey are β βthey'reβ.
After that we have to add β-ingβ to the end of the verb,
so the correct answer is, βThey're playing a game tonight.β
The next sentence says, 'We _blank_ not studying tomorrow.β
Looks good but there's a word that's missing.
This is the negative form because we have βnotβ.
We simply need the βbeβ verb for βweβ.
The correct βbeβ verb is βareβ. βWe are not studying tomorrow.β
The next sentence says, βLynn is _blank_ out tonight.β
and we want to use the verb βgoβ.
Remember 'Lynn' and then the βbeβ verb β βisβ.
That's correct. All we have to do is add β-ingβ.
βLynn is going out tonight.β
To make this negative you can say,
βLynn is not going out tonight.β or βLynn isn't going out tonight.β
The next sentence says, βLaura isn't study this evening.β
Remember we have to add β-ingβ to the end of the verb,
βLaura isn't studying this evening.β
βMy sons will playing chess later.β
We are talking about a future plan,
so you might be tempted to use βwellβ or βwillβ, I'm sorry.
However, instead of saying βwillβ, we use the βbeβ verb.
βMy sons are playing chess later.β
And finally, βShe's not to eating dinner tonight.β
There's an extra word in here that we don't need.
Remember, subject - βbeβ verb, not verb β-ingβ.
We do not need βtoβ in this sentence.
All right well that's the end of this checkup.
You just completed the lesson on the present continuous tense.
This tense is not easy but you did a great job.
