Did you know that in English there are a number of expressions about the kitchen. In this lesson, I'm going to share three of them. Let's start with one of my favorites. “Everything but the kitchen sink.” This expression means too many things or a lot of of unnecessary things. For example, my grand father used to joke in saying that my grand mother carried everything but kitchen sink in her purses. And I have one of the bags that used to belong to my grand mother. Inside she really did carry a lot of things. Everything from a flash light to photo album. She truly carried everything but kitchen sink with her.

Let's go on to the second expression. Over here I have a frying pan and fire. The expressionOut of the frying pan and into the firemeans (that) you just went from one bad situation to another, perhaps even worse. Last expression: let's begin by looking up here. You'll see the ceiling fan. It's quite common to have a ceiling fan in kitchens because when we cook we get hot and who likes to be in a room that's really hot. We sayif you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.” It means that if you can't handle the competition, then quit or don't even start at the first place.

OK? Here are three expressions I shared with you:

Everything but the kitchen sink.” means too many things or a lot of unnecessary things.

Out of the frying pan and into the firewhich meant you went in being with one bad situation and now you're in another, perhaps even worse.

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.” You can also say if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen, which means if you can't face the competition, you should just quit or don't even start in the first place.

Let's see how well you understand. On your screen, you're going to see three conversations. Hit the pause button, read the conversation and see if you know which expression completes each one. When you're ready, press play and then you are going to hear the complete conversation. OK? Here's the first. [see screen and follow the instruction]
